The irrelevent art of a seductive genius
José Luis Cuevas
José Luis Cuevas was one of the most important plastic artists belonging to the “Generation of Rupture”, due to his radical distancing from Mexican muralism and his critical stance regarding the Mexican school of painting.
He was distinguished with the degree Doctor Honoris Causa, by the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (1984). He received the Order of Knight of the Arts and Letters of France (1991); the Goya Medal awarded by the Domecq Cultural Institute, A.C. (nineteen ninety six); among other great international prizes. In 2012 José Luis Cuevas was named as the most important Plastic Artist in Mexico in the Bicentennial of the Supreme Court of Spain. However, it was in 2017 that the artistic genius José Luis Cuevas passed away, representing a great loss for the art world.
In just over three years, the Galería de los Sapos is pleased to present "The Irreverent Art of a Seductive Genius" with more than 26 unpublished pieces from the artist's personal collection, which houses paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, as well as a tapestry and a canvas dedicated to his wife. These are unique works ranging from 1977 to 2015, respectively.
